Facts about the immigrant victim
Fears and Doubts of Victims
For many immigrant women there is a misunderstanding about what defines domestic violence and the stigma associated with it. Most often immigrant women are reluctant to discuss family violence for fear of bringing shame on the family. Many victims desire to preserve the family and marriage at all costs. WTLC is proud to have very diverse and trained staff to assist in alleviating such fears and provide culturally competent services to all its clients.
New Environment
Language and cultural differences often isolate the victim. Consequently, the victims are unaware of their basic civil and legal rights. They are unfamiliar with the social services, school and medical systems as well as transportation that could link them to resources. WTLC helps these clients learn basic life skills to become independent and empowered.
Previous Sufferings
Families may have suffered fragmentation and loss as a result of war and refugee experiences. It is difficult for a refugee /immigrant woman to leave her abuser, as he may be the only surviving relative she has left. Case managers and counselors provide the necessary and supportive environment to all clients and connect them to the available and appropriate support system.
Challenges
Gender inequality in immigrant communities is prevalent and often more visible and pronounced. The lack of linguistically and culturally appropriate resources within communities may make the victims feel isolated. There is often a lack of interpretation services in courts, health care facilities, and domestic violence shelters. Victims often do not know what resources exist or where to get help. WTLC is able to provide culturally competent services to all its clients.
